11/27/2019 "Did you know that dogs and cats can donate blood to help another animal in need? Most pet owners don’t, according to new research published in Veterinary Record. But after learning about the possibility, 89% said they would consider their pet making a donation." - Psychology Today
1/22/2020 "Vets say dogs and cats require blood transfusions for many of the same reasons that humans do. But animal blood-bank supplies are so low, treating the most gravely sick or injured pets can be a challenge." - wjct
12/20/2019 VIDEO: "A Pitt County family held a blood drive for their kitten, who is currently at NC State's Veterinary Hospital seeking treatment. "I'm scared I'm going to lose him," said Kim Costakis, whose kitten Rudy is 8-and-a-half months old." - abc11.com
12/28/2019 "When a female cat is ‘in season’ she is ready to mate (in heat) and this readiness is dependent upon the season (i.e. winter, spring, summer and fall). Queens (intact females) vary at which age they first go into heat." - PoC
12/28/2019 "Most also know that, unlike the smooth penis of other mammals, the cat’s penis is covered in sharp, backward-pointing spines. In essence it is a barbed instrument of torture when withdrawn after mating." - PoC
11/14/2019 "I’m a big advocate for spay/neuter. It’s a crucial part of the equation for reducing the number of cats killed in shelters, and having your cat spayed or neutered improves cat health, reducing the chances of injury and disease. But a lot of us encounter cat pregnancy at some point, whether through working at a clinic or shelter, an accidental liaison or deliberate breeding. So, how long are cats pregnant for and what should you expect week by week? Let’s look at the five stages of cat pregnancy." - PetTraining
PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch - “When cats and dogs are dying on the streets and in shelters across the country every day, stemming the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis is the greatest gift that we can give companion animals.”
More than 6 million dogs and cats end up at animal shelters every year, and half of them must be euthanized, many simply because there aren’t enough good homes for them. In addition, “no-kill” policies like those at the nearby Edison Municipal Animal Shelter—which charges surrender fees, requires surrender appointments, won’t accept animals with behavior problems or without veterinary records, and turns animals away if the shelter is full—can cause desperate people to abandon animals to fend for themselves. The only effective, long-term solution to the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis is spaying and neutering.
2/11/2020 "Although the mantra is that spaying is a “simple” surgery, do look for a vet who does a lot of these procedures. Practice makes perfect. As there are different surgical techniques, ask what will happen during the operation, where the wound will be, how big it will be, and what your vet expects in terms of recovery time and conditions." - TheStar
1/2/2020 "Q: Stormi, my new kitten, will be an indoor-outdoor cat. I know she needs to be vaccinated and eventually sterilized, but isn't it better to let her have one litter of kittens before that?" - Creators.com
12/15/2019 "Kyriacou recognises only too well the plight of the stray cat population and how it is deteriorating as numbers spiral, but he advocates caution over random cat neutering. “The situation is getting worse and worse. I know it and it’s in front of everyone’s eyes. However, we need to be careful when talking about cat neutering. Often volunteers, despite their good intentions, create more harm than good.” - CyprusMail
11/17/2019 VIDEO: "For Today’s Pet Doc, we are talking about when it is time to spay and neuter your cat. When is the best time to scheduled that surgery? Nikki Burdine has this week’s ‘Pet Doc’ report." - WKRN
11/10/2019 "The answer is that spayed and neutered domestic cats ‘tended to be heavier than those that weren’t’. So the answer is, yes, spayed and neutered cats do put on weight but the experts are unsure why." "The quote short above comes from the CBC.com website. The author refers to a massive AVMA study on domestic cat weight. The study involved more than 19 million cats in the US and Canada so the conclusion is very solid..." - PoC
